Italy 2026 part 13 – Bologna

The clothing shops are not afraid of chartreuse in this town! Digging it, my favorite color!

Gorgeous macchiato breakfast at Roxy bar, 9am, much better sketch today of the tall Torre. Gonna do Roxy every morning.

This nerd had to visit Chieso San Petronio to check out the Meridian line. The church plan was aligned to allow the Meridian line on the floor to not intersect any columns. In fact the architect’s seat at the base of a high rear window, from which he aligned the meridian to the camera obscura in the ceiling, is still there. I need to read up on this guy that was both a scientist and able to influence the Catholic church. I arrived at 11:55 and positioned myself just before October marking but failed to note that due to the time change, the solar crossing is actually at 1. I told the French guys on my right — time for lunch, back in an hour!

The Meridian Line of San Petronio

Curiosities of Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore

Ancient Roman Bologna

Ok it’s 12:23. The sun crosses the meridian line in San Petronio at 1:07pm. I just sat down at a pizza place. Can I make it back in time?? 3min walk. Answer: I’m going to manifest a quick Napoli pizza cuz I gotta do both!! Pizza arrived 12:42. Not actually as good as Naples but pretty damn good.

Crossing should be just to left of the October plaque, September is 50 ft to the left
Proper leopard spotting on crust bottom.

OK, for some reason I still don’t understand, the solar crossing was near the September plaque and not October. But still amazing to see.

“Look at all those silly people standing in the wrong spot”
You can set your pocket sundials to noon now…
Unless today is actually Sept 7 ?????

Next location was a failure, Arca di San Domenico was inaccessible due to construction which I personally verified by walking around the entire perimeter. But Impero Bar Pasticceria’s got me, with a Caffe correto and a berry tart and time to blog and Instagram and maybe paint. I would say coffee doesn’t need correction but it’s not cream in the tiny pitcher but rum. By the way the berry tart was a thing of beauty. And I was there for a blissful 2 hours.

A magnet is pulling me back to the Piazza for painting even tho I could probably paint here at the cafe, but it’s not so picturesque here.

Day turning into night is a special time, even with the locals yelling at the immigrants and an out of control barking dog and out of control barking owner. I passed the beautiful orologico midday when the sun was on it but I was on a schedule to eat then return for the meridian crossing at 1pm, so, priorities. But tonight I was able to include San Petronio in the sketch as well.

Spot the nuns
Nightfall in Piazza Maggiore
Which one by Michaelangelo? Don’t you feel sorry for the other artist doomed to be forever compared?
Just chicken but just right. Pasta for lunch, meat for dinner is the right rhythm. Campari spritz anytime.

So tired tonight I passed out before taking my contacts out!
